The workshop
Clay, colour and patience
In a narrow street of Old Pet, Krishnagiri, the Kandhan family has made Ganesha idols, Dasara dolls and golu bommai since 1981. The work has always been simple and slow: good clay, well-kept moulds, the sun to dry the figures, and steady hands to paint each face.
Families from the town and far beyond have trusted our dolls for their Navaratri padi. The Golu Shop is our way of reaching the families who cannot visit the street — wherever in the world they keep their golu.
How a doll is made
From clay to padi

Clay
Fine clay is cleaned, softened and kneaded until it is ready for the mould.

Mould
It is pressed into family moulds, joined, and finished by hand.

Sun-dry
Figures dry slowly in the sun so they stay strong.

Paint
Base colours first, then the eyes, jewels and borders — by hand.

Pack
Each doll is wrapped and boxed to travel safely.
